Flying to Aero-Expo Friedrichshafen April 2009

Postby neilgeddes » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:39 am

Hello, I'm planning to fly to the Aero-Expo Friedrichshafen show www.aero-friedrichshafen.de with two private pilot friends in a PA28 from Biggin Hill (Cabair). We're IMC rated with good experience of flying in north west France and generally making trips away. Flying further east into France and Germany will be new to us though and so we'd welcome advice with regard to good navigation routes, avoiding restricted areas, busy airspace and so on. My first thought is to fly south of Lille, past Metz then south of Strasbourg. I can see a lot of class D airspace to negotiate as well as high ground. Any other suggestions for routing? Thank you. Unfortunately we've had to cancel our planned trip to Aero-Expo Friedrichshafen due to the severe airspace restrictions imposed by the Nato 60th summit at Strasbourg. It's near impossible to fly in VFR from the North or West. Shame. So instead we're heading North to the Isle of Man then Cambeltown (Mull of Kintyre). I'm sure the Scots will be more accomodating!

Fly In to Prague

Neil

Sorry to hear that you had to cancel your trip to Friedrichshafen, have you considered flying to Prague next month? Charles Strasser has organised and independent fly in and arranged considerable discounts on hotel accommodation, landing fees and entry into AERO EXPO. For information visit http://www.aopa.co.uk/scripts/news.php?id=MTI1.

Hi Mandy,

Thanks but Prague's a little too far for us in our club PA28. We did have a plan B, to route up to Campbeltown (Scotland) via the Isle of Man but that also had to be cancelled; there was too much low cloud and fog that weekend. Never mind. Just day tripped yesterday from Biggin Hill to Alderney with a friend in the most glorious sunshine. You can't beat this as a hobby!

Best regards, Neil
